PROPOSAL FOR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION "MAYUKWAYUKWA REFUGEE CAMP - A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CENTER IN ZAMBIA" (2023)
Author: PAULA VILELA
The Mayukwayukwa Sustainable Development Center for Refugees project was designed based on welcoming, sharing and collective construction. With diverse activities, the project materializes meeting and learning spaces.
The U-shaped building crossed by a central passage axis and spaces of visual and physical permeability that integrate its activities, provides an inviting and aggregating atmosphere.
The implementation allows the preservation of all trees marked on the land, defining a large central courtyard that embraces the main tree on the site.
A slight inclination of the design route in relation to the north orientation allows the facades to receive the morning sun and be protected from the direct incidence of the setting sun.
A light, rational and modular construction was designed to generate savings and speed in carrying out the work. The structure is made of wood with lightweight elements for simple assembly and the walls are made of bricks molded in situ using a manual press.
The sectorization of activities favors the construction stages in 3 phases. Furthermore, the sequence of programs throughout the building goes from more collective spaces to more private spaces.
The existing annex is integrated into the new project based on the suitability of its internal uses. The coating of its facades with clay mortar and the superimposition of a light wooden structure to accommodate the metal roof unify the building with the new project.
From the combination of economical construction techniques and generous solutions to the location and its demands, the project provides spaces for integration and belonging. Its design organizes and harmonizes different activities and enhances the atmosphere of coexistence and collective development.
